A foreign visitor has only one day to spend in your country. Where should this visitor go on that day? Why?
Use specific reasons and details to support your choice.
The author claims that a foreign visitor has only one day to spend in your country. As such, the traveler should visit a popular tourist site or landmark. While I agree that this visitor should visit a popular site, I disagree that it should be the highest peak or most popular landmark. A site or landmark should be chosen based on some unique characteristic that will draw the visitor in, thus making the visitor’s time worthwhile.
The author assumes that a one day visit will be all that this foreign visitor has to see of your beautiful country. If his itinerary involves spending the night, then the author may be correct. However, if his itinerary is just a few hours, then I disagree. It is true that some countries have only one major tourist site, for example, the Grand Canyon of the United States. However, there are many others, such as the United Kingdom, that have numerous sites that attract visitors. Choosing just one site would be ridiculous.
It would also not make sense to choose a site or landmark based on popularity. What attracts people to a particular site? Is it the natural setting, the historical significance, or something else entirely? To answer that, one must consider the destination. Does the area have nice mountains, lush forests, or beautiful beaches? Is it teeming with wildlife, or is the wildlife confined to a zoo? Whatever the site’s unique characteristics, the visitor needs to be drawn to that site. Otherwise, there will only be one other person there. For example, if you visit Hawaii, visit Pearl Harbor, not just because it is the most famous landmark on the island, but because it embodies the ignominy of that fateful day when the Japanese battleships attacked. The United States lost some 2,400 servicemen on that day, and Hawaii was devastated economically. A visitor to Hawaii should visit Pearl Harbor not only to learn about the event, but to feel that sense of loss, which will draw the visitor in and make him want to linger.
While the author is correct that the visitor’s itinerary for the day needs to be limited to one day, I disagree with her recommendation to visit the most popular site or landmark. Instead, choose something that will draw the visitor in, and make her want to linger.
