Describe a custom from your country that you would like people from other countries to adopt.
Explain your choice, using specific reasons and examples.
I would like that other countries adopt my custom of eating together at mealtime. The assertion seems to be referring to a custom of eating meals together at specific times. However, in other countries, families eat at different times of the day. This custom seems to be unique to Americans. In fact, many Japanese people prefer to work during their lunch hour, and some French people eat their meals in the afternoon. When the statement speaks of eating at mealtime, he is most likely referring to eating lunch at the same table, usually in the afternoon, and dinner together in the evening. This custom is unique to the United States. While Americans are not the only ones who eat together at mealtime, it is truly an American custom. Other countries, such as Japan and France, may have meal times, but there are no set times for families to eat together. In Japan, families eat at different times of the day, and for many, dinner is eaten while at work, or after work or school.
In France, lunch is typically served at about the same time as dinner, and many French people eat at noon. In this country, it is quite common to eat a midday snack, such as a sandwich, or there is even a popular fast-food chain, Le Pain Quotidien, where customers may order sandwiches or pastries to eat on their lunch break. Meanwhile, dinner is generally eaten in late afternoon, or, in some cases, as late as 10:00 pm. The evening meal is usually eaten at home, with family, but some people, especially children, may eat out. In France, many restaurants have special menus for children. These menus may be smaller portions, or may include child-sized portions of certain dishes. This custom of eating together at mealtime, while common in France, is not unique to this country. In fact, it is quite common in other parts of the world, such as Italy and Spain.
While it is true that most people in the world eat at different times of the day, myself included, I think it is important to eat together at mealtime. Not only is it enjoyable to share a meal with family members, but eating together at mealtime promotes family togetherness. Dinnertime is the best time for families to spend quality time together, talking and laughing, and sharing the day’s events. This togetherness is especially important for children, who crave the affection and attention of their parents. Eating together at mealtime also gives children a chance to learn table manners, such as using utensils and keeping their elbows off the table. These important life skills will be invaluable to them as they grow up.
