Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Attending a live performance (for example, a play, concert, or sporting event) is more enjoyable than watching the same event on television.

Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.

Having been to many live performances, I can attest to the fact that they are indeed more enjoyable than watching television. The live experience is far more engaging and, in many cases, more entertaining. Since television cannot pan or zoom, viewers are limited to a fixed view of the stage, making the viewer feel somewhat removed from the action; in contrast, live performers interact with the audience, creating a more participatory atmosphere. In addition, because the performance is taking place in a theater, the viewer can easily see facial expressions and other non-verbal cues that convey the emotions that are being portrayed. While watching an event on television, the viewer is limited to the camera angles, and must rely primarily on the audio description for information about what is happening on stage. This limits the entertainment value since the viewer cannot fully experience the emotions of the characters as they are portrayed. The live experience is much more exciting and engaging to watch because it provides the viewer with a multitude of opportunities to feel closer to the performers, and enhances the entertainment value by filling in the gaps of the viewer’s understanding of the story.

While I agree that attending a live performance is more enjoyable than watching the same event on television, there are many situations in which the television experience can be superior to the live one. First, television is more accessible than going to the theater. Live performances require purchasing a ticket, which can sometimes be inconvenient and expensive. Moreover, for many performances, tickets can only be purchased for a specific date and time, making it nearly impossible to reschedule the time for which the ticket was purchased. Thus, if one has to travel a long distance to attend a performance, he or she is likely to run into many other inconveniences, such as expensive train fares, long waits at busy airports, and traffic delays. By contrast, television programs are free to watch at any time, and do not require any kind of special equipment. Furthermore, television viewers do not have to deal with the inconvenience of going to the theater, which is often located in a far-off area of town or city, which may require expensive transportation. For example, when one wants to watch a Broadway play, one may be confined to traveling to New York City, with its high cost of living and crowded streets. In contrast, television viewers can watch shows in the comfort of their own homes, or even on vacation, wherever that may be.

Another way in which television is superior to the live experience is in the variety of shows that can be viewed. Although a theater may feature several high-profile plays and concerts throughout the year, there is no guarantee that a given performance will be interesting to the viewer. Furthermore, the schedule can change at any time, and there is no guarantee that any performance will indeed take place. In contrast, television viewers have a vast selection of programs from which to choose, and can choose programs based on their genre and personal preferences. For example, if one likes comedy, one can easily watch any number of comedy shows, such as ‘The Big Bang Theory’, ‘Parks and Recreation’, ‘The Office’, or ‘Modern Family’. If one prefers drama, one can choose any of the dramas that air on television, such as ‘Boardwalk Empire’, ‘Game of Thrones’, or ‘Breaking Bad’. Furthermore, television viewers have the option of recording these programs, and watching them at their convenience. If one misses an episode of a favorite show, it can easily be viewed at a later time. Finally, television viewers have the option of viewing all of the major networks in one country, such as in the United States, or in many other countries, such as the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. While there may be a few shows that are broadcast only in these countries, the vast majority of television shows are broadcast in multiple languages throughout the world, allowing viewers from all over the world to tune in to their favorite shows. Thus, in my opinion, attending a live performance is more enjoyable than watching television, but only in certain situations.
