Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Boys and girls should attend separate schools.

Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

The author argues that boys and girls should be educated in separate schools because boys and girls are biologically different. I, however, disagree with the notion that boys and girls are biologically different. In fact, both sexes have many things in common that allow them to learn effectively together in classrooms. Instead of separating students by gender, I would advocate focusing more on the learning environment that works best for boys and girls.

The author is right in pointing out that boys have traditionally received more focus from society. Men have been encouraged to excel in their professions and to excel financially while women have been encouraged to accomplish the same, but yet women have been discouraged from excelling in these fields. The subtle message that society sends is that boys should strive to be like their father or male role models and girls should aspire to be like their mother or female role models. This is a problem because all children, regardless of their gender, should aspire to become the best versions of themselves. Boys and girls have very distinctive personalities and different interests. Boys tend to favor working with their hands, while girls are more verbal and tend to excel in math. All children should be encouraged to reach their full potential in high school, and by high school most children are capable of becoming either a doctor or a teacher, and either a role that is traditionally held by men or women. If boys and girls are forced to become one or the other, they are not going to be able to reach their full potential. Instead, separating them by gender simply leads to inequality.

There are also psychological differences between boys and girls that need to be addressed. Boys and girls have different learning styles. Boys tend to be visual learners, meaning they can learn from watching a video or reading a how-to manual. Girls, on the other hand, learn best by doing. If boys are forced to listen to a lecture while a girl is reading, for example, the girl will be able to retain the information better than the boy. Also, boys tend to process information better through physical activity, while girls process through verbal discussion. Having boys and girls in a classroom together forces teachers to cater to the different learning styles of both genders. If girls and boys are educated in separate classes, teachers can make sure that each gender is learning in a way that bests suits them. However, when boys and girls are forced to learn in classes together and the teacher cannot cater to the learning styles of both genders, students may become frustrated or even bored. In addition, when boys and girls are forced to go to school together, they may be forced to interact with each other in a coed classroom where social codes of behavior are not clearly established, leading to more conflict.

If girls and boys are educated together, however, there must also be provisions for teacher guidance. Teachers must be trained to teach both boys and girls. There must be guidelines for how to deal with inappropriate behavior in coed classrooms. Teachers must also be aware that boys and girls have different learning styles, and they must teach accordingly. The social differences between boys and girls must also be addressed. When boys and girls are forced to interact in a class setting, there needs to be some way for them to get along with classmates. If boys and girls are educated in separate classrooms, teachers will be less likely to neglect the needs of either gender, and students will receive an education that is much more well rounded.
