Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? People are never satisfied with what they have; they always want something more or something different.

Use specific reasons to support your answer.

People are never satisfied with what they have; they always want something more or something different. In this world, people pursue an existence in which they desire more. While this is true, it does not follow that people are always unhappy or dissatisfied with what they currently have. People can be content even when they possess little, or they can be content even when they are in situations that appear to be dire.

I believe this statement to be true, but that does not necessarily mean that they are content. For example, anyone who has ever owned a house can attest to the fact that one is never truly content to have nothing but a mortgage hanging over their heads. Moreover, although it may be the case that people are constantly chasing more, this does not necessarily mean that they are unhappy or dissatisfied. I contend that, while people may be chasing material possessions, they are not always unhappy or dissatisfied with what they have.

I know many people who have never been satisfied with what they have, but I am happy to say that I am not one of them. I have grown up in a house that my parents built. The mortgage was paid off long ago, and my parents no longer work. They live off of their savings, and as long as I have the house, I will be content. Although I am surrounded by luxury and comfort, I feel no desire at all to leave that house. My father enjoys gardening, and my mother likes to cook, and both these tasks are easy tasks to do in a three-bedroom home. Granted, the house is not huge and could be a little larger, but my family is content with what we have and have never been dissatisfied.

I have a friend whose parents own a condominium. My friend’s family is large and usually stays there when on vacation. This condominium is very nice, and my friend’s parents enjoy living there. However, my friend’s family is always complaining about how difficult and expensive it is to live in a condominium. They say that the condominium owners are too uptight and do not allow them to use the facilities of the condominium. My friend tells me that her parents are always trying to negotiate a better price on condominium fees with the condominium board. While my friend’s family may be discontent with what they have, they are doing the best they can with what they have.

Everyone deals with dissatisfaction in life, but I believe that most people are content with what they have. Today, there are many people around the world who are extremely wealthy, but they are still discontent, because they want more. A world in which everyone was satisfied with what they had might be boring and without excitement. A world in which everyone was chasing after more and more possessions might be dangerous, as people fight over possessions and get into various conflicts. However, as long as people remain content with what they have, they will be happy, and the pursuit of more might be worthwhile.

In conclusion, the statement that people cannot be content with what they have is true, but this does not mean that people are unhappy or dissatisfied. Perhaps people chase after more because they are content with what they already have.
