Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? People should sometimes do things that they do not enjoy doing.

Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

People should always do what they enjoy.

While some people may not enjoy doing something, they should do it anyway.

The statement above is a moral dilemma. On the one hand, it implies that we should never do anything that we do not enjoy, or that we dislike. However, on the other, it also suggests that we should always do what we enjoy, even if we do not enjoy doing it.

I think that this rule can be interpreted in different ways, and the ‘always do what you enjoy’ part can be misconstrued to mean that we should never do anything that we do not enjoy, or that we dislike. Instead, I think the statement should be understood to mean that people should do things that they are capable, even if those things are unpleasant, because not doing so can lead to a downward spiral of laziness and indolence. While it is true that some people may enjoy doing something, it is also true that doing something that you enjoy does not necessarily automatically ensure success. For example, I enjoy playing guitar, and I enjoy playing video games. However, I am a terrible guitarist, and I only play games that are easy to learn. Thus, my enjoyment of these activities does not necessarily translate into any success. Living a life where everything is something you enjoy is unrealistic. ‘Always do what you enjoy’ presupposes that the only things worth pursuing are the things that one enjoys. This can prevent people from pursuing things that they personally find boring, frustrating, or undesirable. Such an attitude can be dangerous because it can foster an unhealthy sense of apathy, which can have widespread negative effects on a person’s career and overall well-being.

I do, however, think the statement is correct in one respect. I believe that people should do things that they are capable, even if those things are unpleasant, because not doing so can result in a downward spiral of laziness and indolence. The inability to motivate oneself to follow through on even the simplest of tasks can often lead to intense feelings of guilt. For example, if I wake up late and realize that I have an important exam the next day, I may feel a tremendous amount of guilt for not being able to wake up earlier. This guilt can lead to a downward spiral of laziness and indolence, because if I constantly feel guilt, I will rarely do anything that I regret. If I wake up early and have to prepare for the exam, however, I will rarely experience any feelings of guilt, and this sense of motivation will lead to a more successful outcome.

The statement above is suggesting that people should do things that they are capable, even if those things are unpleasant, and I agree completely. However, the statement should be interpreted to mean that people should do things that they are capable, even if those things are unpleasant, but that they should do it in spite of their unpleasantness.
