Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? With the help of technology, students nowadays can learn more information and learn it more quickly.

Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

The ability to access more information through technology has without a doubt improved the educational process. Access to more information, when paired with the proper tools, gives students the opportunity to understand a subject’s content more deeply and to learn it in a faster fashion.

However, we must also take into account the fact that the internet has become a breeding ground for misinformation. Many websites contain incorrect information, and without it, students would not have access to information on subjects that interest them.

If we are to believe this statement, then one must assume that all good information can be found on the internet. However, this simply is not the case. While it is true that the internet is overflowing with information, much of it is incomplete and outdated, and thus students are unable to find what they need to know. For example, when looking up information regarding the etymology of the English word ‘horse’, one may come across numerous websites with inaccurate information about the origin of the word. Many of these websites claim the word to have descended from the Old English word ‘h(o)re’, which describes the hindquarters of a horse. However, this is false; the word ‘horse’ is actually derived from the Proto-Germanic word ‘horsa’, which referred to the front legs of a horse. Thus, the fact that some websites contain incorrect information does not negate the positive effect that technology has on education. Rather, this shows that just because the internet contains a large amount of information, this does not mean that all of the information is correct. As a result, students need to be more critical of the sources that they access on the internet, and to prepare themselves for the possibility that information given to them could be inaccurate or biased.

One of the biggest problems facing students today is the lack of writing skills. Even in our modern age, many students lack the ability to effectively communicate their ideas in writing. As a result, they often struggle in courses like English and History, which are usually based on reading large amounts of text. However, most colleges and universities now require students to take at least one online class, forcing many students to use the internet to complete assignments. This puts many students in the position of having to sift through mountains of text in order to find anything useful. This scenario is further complicated by the tendency for online writing to be riddled with grammar and spelling errors, making it even more challenging for students to find the information they need. Moreover, when students attempt to find information online, they often encounter websites that are full of advertisements, thus distracting them from the actual content. All of this makes it extremely difficult for students to find relevant information, and therefore, technology cannot help here. However, technology does help by providing students with better tools with which to improve their writing abilities. For example, many online writing guides provide students with feedback on their writing style, allowing them to improve at a much faster rate than they would if left to their own devices. Thus, while technology cannot help students access information that is useful, it can certainly help them to improve their writing skills, allowing them to extract useful information from vast amounts of text.

Overall, while the internet has undoubtedly made the process of learning more efficient by enabling instant access to vast amounts of information, it has also given rise to the problem of providing students with accurate information. Thus, while technology certainly has many benefits, it cannot, by itself, solve all of the problems faced by the students of today.
