While there is an undeniable truth in this statement, the educational system should not necessarily discourage students from choosing subjects in which they are likely not to succeed. The education system has an obligation to guide students as they consider their educational choices, but it should not necessarily discourage them from gaining knowledge in areas that they find interesting

In 2013, the US Department of Education released a report entitled ‘The Condition of Education 2013′. It revealed that 50% of college graduates were underemployed or unemployed, and that 1 in 5 students did not complete their degrees within six years. The report cited a number of factors as contributing factors to these statistics, including decreased state funding, increased student loan debt, and the need to work while attending school. These issues have placed enormous pressure on students to graduate within six years, and many students have been left with a crippling debt that will take years to repay. This debt has forced many to forgo their dreams of higher education, and to pursue careers in fields in which their lack of experience makes them unemployable. However, the education system has a responsibility to provide students with the means to obtain an education. Whether that means providing grants or scholarships, or offering programs to help students complete degrees in less time, the education system should work to help students achieve their educational goals

Furthermore, in today’s competitive job market, students need every advantage they can get. According to the report, the fields of engineering and computer science continue to register the highest rates of unemployment, and despite a 13% growth in enrollment in these fields between 2009 and 2013, the number of graduates has not increased. Many students may be interested in those fields, but the prospect of being unable to find employment after graduation may be enough to dissuade them from pursuing them. While there certainly are fields in which students are unlikely to find success, the education system should not discourage them completely from choosing one of those fields to fulfill their educational dreams. Instead, students should be given the opportunity to gain as much exposure as possible to the career fields of their choice, so that they can make an informed decision about their future

Students should be encouraged to follow their passions, but should also be able to gain an education that will allow them to succeed after graduation. The education system should encourage students to explore their options and to make decisions that they believe will lead them to fulfilling lives.
