The suggestion made by the author that governments should offer college and university education free of charge to all students is laudable, but several factors mitigate against the proposal’s success. The argument that the government should offer free education to all students is based on the premise that education is an essential aspect of an individual’s life. With proper education, individuals will be able to improve their lives and improve society. However, there are some disadvantages to providing free education; therefore, education should be offered to all, but at a cost to taxpayers.
While it is true that education is an essential aspect of an individual’s life, this cannot be emphasized enough. Without education, an individual is destined to be stuck in a cycle of poverty, living in slums, and unable to rise above the ranks in society. Furthermore, providing free education will not give all students an equal chance to succeed. Some students may be better than others and, therefore, more likely to succeed in college. Students from wealthy families can also afford private tutors and additional educational tools, such as expensive textbooks and computers, which many students without these advantages cannot afford.
Furthermore, some students can’t study for long periods, such as those working jobs to help pay for their tuition. Students from impoverished families will not be able to invest in such luxuries. They offer their best effort, but they may not be able to overcome their circumstances and succeed due to their economic situation.
While it is true that education is essential, it is equally important that students pay for their education. The economic burden of paying tuition and living costs is too significant for many, leading to mass dropouts, especially from community colleges. Free education hinders the goal of providing equal educational opportunities to everyone. College is an expensive, yet necessary, part of becoming a well-rounded individual. Without an education, an individual will be unable to compete in the job market. If unable to find a job, they will fall into a cycle of poverty and starvation.
While free education would improve the lives of those living in poverty, it would provide virtually no benefit for the middle class. Middle-class families, often the primary breadwinners, would struggle to pay for the increased education costs. As such, their standard of living would decrease, making them worse off than they were before. Furthermore, free education would lead to an overall increase in societal costs related to higher education. For example, the government would have to provide more funding to provide free education to students, and this money would have to come from somewhere. The increased costs would shift the burden to taxpayers who are already struggling to pay their bills. In addition, to pay for college, students would have to work longer hours, which would decrease their productivity, leading to a decrease in tax revenue. Therefore, while free education would be beneficial to some people, it would only worsen the situation for the middle class, which would not benefit society.
One of the primary reasons that education should be free is because it is an investment in society. Young adults are the future leaders of a country and, as such, should be educated. The knowledge obtained through education can lead to innovation and discovery, which, in turn, can shape a nation’s future. In addition, an educated population is more likely to produce high-quality, innovative products and contribute to the country’s well-being. However, education is also an essential component of national development. When individuals can study, they can contribute to the advancement of society, improve the economy, and increase the nation’s wealth.
Educational opportunities should be available to everyone, but, as stated above, this should not be at the expense of taxpayers. Since education is such an essential part of life, the government should find ways for citizens to pay for their education by offering student loan programs and grants. This way, the government can invest in the country’s future without placing an undue burden on taxpayers.
