It has recently been announced that a large shopping center may be built in your neighborhood. Do you support or oppose this plan? Why?

Use specific reasons and details to support your answer.

Recently, it has been revealed that a large shopping center will be constructed near your neighborhood. The construction will not only bring in revenue, but will also change the ambience of your neighborhood. While there is no doubt that the shopping center will bring in much needed revenue, I oppose the building of it because I believe that it will change the atmosphere in a negative way.

Even before the announcement of the construction, the strip mall located on the outskirts of my town was already teeming with people day and night. It seemed as though many of the businesses in the strip mall were struggling and raising their prices just to stay afloat. This, coupled with the fact that the strip mall was not close to my home, led me to believe that it would not be good for the surrounding area. However, I supported the construction of the shopping center because it would help revitalize the strip mall, which, in turn, would attract more businesses to the area. The construction of the shopping center will add more parking spaces and easier access, which will increase business. If the shopping center is a success, it will encourage other businesses to consider moving to the area. This influx of new businesses will bring in more revenue, which will benefit the struggling strip mall. Having more businesses, especially chain restaurants, will increase foot traffic in the area, which will ultimately lead to the revitalization of the strip mall.

The strip mall is located next to a freeway, which creates noise pollution and is dangerous to those who live nearby, as well as the drivers of the freeway. The construction will pose a safety hazard as well, as, because the strip mall will be constructed so close to the freeway, the construction workers will need to have heavy machinery like bulldozers, dump trucks, and cranes, all of which create loud noises that will disturb those living near the construction. The construction will also create traffic in the area, which will stress out the residents of the neighborhood, as well as hinder traffic on nearby streets. The noise pollution and traffic will cause property values in the area to decline, as people will start moving away. The construction of the shopping center will also make it harder for families to spend time together, as the constant noise from the construction will make it difficult to enjoy walks or bike rides, and the constant traffic will make it difficult to get to the park for a picnic. I, therefore, conclude that the construction of the shopping center will have a negative effect on the neighborhood’s atmosphere.
