It has recently been announced that a new restaurant may be built in your neighborhood. Do you support or oppose this plan? Why?
Use specific reasons and details to support your answer.
The debaters are correct in stating that a new restaurant might be built in your neighborhood. However, they are not correct in claiming that this is a good thing. There are certainly plenty of people that will relish the chance for a new eatery to open in their area, but there are also many who do not.
The first reason that I do not support the building of a new restaurant in your neighborhood is that it will bring more business to the area. It is true that a new restaurant might draw in more business, but it will not do so for everyone. In fact, it might only draw in new business for those that are already nearby. Take, for example, a diner that has been in business for many years. People will walk around the neighborhood, stop by, and stop in for a quick bite to eat. If a new eatery opened nearby, many of those same patrons would drive the new eatery’s business. They likely would not stop for a meal. Therefore, the diner would not have increased business. In contrast, a person that lives in the neighborhood and does not visit the restaurant regularly might be more inclined to stop if the new eatery was nearby. Overall, this would result in more business for the restaurant, but it might not be good overall business.
Another reason that I do not support the building of a new restaurant in your neighborhood is that a new eatery may not increase business for the area. The the business owner may be counting on a steady stream of customers in order to keep the business open. However, if the area is not busy, the business could struggle. Often, new businesses fail because the owner does not attract the kind of customers, such as office workers, that keep the business open. Therefore, if the area is already not busy, then a new eatery will not help attract customers. Furthermore, if the area is already busy, then a new eatery will only add to the congestion. Many people do not like to drive around in heavy traffic areas, and they may avoid going to the restaurant if the area is already congested.
Finally, I do not support the building of a new restaurant in your neighborhood because it will increase the amount of traffic in the area. When the area is already crowded, people usually try to avoid driving through it. This not only causes more pollution, but it also increases the likelihood of accidents and traffic violations. Additionally, if a new restaurant does not live up to the expectations set by online reviews, people may steer clear of the restaurant, which will cause even more traffic. Thus, the building of a new restaurant is not a benefit for everyone.
The debate on the merits of building a restaurant in your neighborhood is not clear-cut. Some argue that new restaurants are beneficial because they draw in more customers. Others, however, assert that new restaurants only draw in new customers that are already nearby. Ultimately, it must be determined whether the new business would benefit you, your neighbors, or the entire community.
