It is more harmful to compromise one’s own beliefs than to adhere to them.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.
There is a common saying that goes, ‘a person who stands for nothing will fall for anything.’ This saying is as true today as it was in ancient times. Taking this saying at face value, we must consider whether compromising our own beliefs is harmful to us
It is human nature to want what is best for us and what is best for those around us. Many people, through the course of their lives, may witness injustice, or suffer in natural disasters, or experience conflict. These situations may lead them to question their beliefs and to question whether their beliefs are right. Such events may prompt them to examine their beliefs more closely, and perhaps challenge them. Such examination is important because it can lead to a re-examination of our beliefs, and when new beliefs are adopted, it can have a positive effect on our lives, making us more content with our lives
Unfortunately, some people do not take the time to examine their beliefs. Instead, they simply swallow their doubts and cling to their beliefs, no matter how questionable they may be. This can lead them to make poor choices, such as choosing to remain in an abusive relationship. Another example is a person who believes that alcoholism is harmless to an individual, but continues drinking anyway. This person may experience harmful consequences, such as injury to his or her body, or to his or her relationships. When such a choice is made, the harm done to oneself is great, but the harm caused to society or to those around is even greater. This is not to say that we should never question our beliefs, but we must take care not to lose ourselves in the process. A compromise with our beliefs may be healthier for society than adhering to them blindly.
