It is primarily through our identification with social groups that we define ourselves.

Social identification is the process by which we define ourselves and inarguably one of the most basic ways we interact with the world. Social identification is crucial to the human experience, for it helps us form bonds, find commonalities, and ultimately develop a collective community.
A typical example is that of sports fans. When sports fans view a game, they see themselves as members of a particular group, and part of that group’s collective identity is rooted in specific quirks and rituals that fans share. For example, it might be the raucous cheering that erupts after a touchdown, the chants of victory that echo across stadiums after a big win, or the camaraderie that fans develop by gathering together at games. These activities demonstrate the central role of social structures in identity, and they would not be possible without the participants’ identification with the group.
Many people actively identify with other social groups, too. For example, women often identify with women’s groups, such as book clubs, cooking clubs, or hiking groups. Such groups help women bond over shared interests, and they often share specific values, such as the importance of equality and the matter of time together. However, these groups also perpetuate certain stereotypes of femininity or masculinity, which can reinforce or challenge them. People identifying with particular groups might embrace certain stereotypes, while others may challenge them. In 2014, for example, a viral video of a group of female rugby players kicking butt on the field went viral. The video garnered tens of millions of views, and hundreds of news outlets covered the story. In their article, CNN interviewed the rugby players and coaches, and they found that many young men were inspired to play rugby after watching the video. However, other players were dismayed by it, as they felt that their sport was degrading to women. Although rugby was ridiculed for reinforcing gender stereotypes, it was embraced by those who identified with it, and the sport continues to thrive today.
In sum, social identification is an integral part of human behavior, and for many, social groups are a vital part of developing an identity. Social groups help us establish our identities, and they help us form bonds with one another. At the same time, however, groups can be problematic, as they often perpetuate stereotypes and promote beliefs that are not reflective of the whole group.
