Many students choose to attend schools or universities outside their home countries. Why do some students study abroad?
Use specific reasons and details to explain your answer.
The student means that many students choose to attend schools or universities in other countries rather than in their home countries. However, the statement is not entirely correct because not all students choose to study abroad. Some students choose to attend schools and universities in their home country. Students go abroad for a variety of reasons; however, in most cases, students choose schools abroad because they cannot attain the level of education they desire in their native country. The reasons students choose institutions in their home countries include: 1) the school is less expensive than the one in their home country, 2) the school offers the student’s desired major, 3) the school is farther away, and 4) the student’s family wishes the student to study in their home countryThe first reason students choose to attend schools or universities in their home country is the cost. Students from many countries, including the US and European countries, face substantial tuition costs at colleges and universities. To pay these fees, they must secure scholarships and financial aid. The closer the school is to the student’s home, the less expensive the tuition. However, even students who are willing to travel to a foreign country for a higher education still face expenses. These expenses include airfare, room and board, tuition, books, transportation, and other miscellaneous costs. All of these expenses are not covered by the school, leaving students to cover these expenses on their own. This burden can be especially heavy on students who choose to attend schools outside their home country. Because students must travel long distances to attend these schools, they must spend a great deal of money. Thus, students with the financial means can attend schools outside their home country, while students who cannot attend schools outside their home country must enroll in schools in their home country in order to afford an education.
The second reason students choose to attend schools or universities in their home country is the school offers the student’s desired major. Many students pursue higher education in order to acquire the skills needed for their dream jobs. Unfortunately, some schools offer majors that students do not find interesting or that are relevant to their future careers. Furthermore, some schools offer majors that require more classes than students want to graduate. These students may choose to avoid these schools altogether, and attend schools in their home country where they can pursue majors that are more suited to their career goals.
The third reason students choose to attend schools or universities in their home country is the distance. Students often choose schools abroad because they live far away from these schools. Indeed, some students choose to study abroad so that they can experience life in a foreign country. However, these students often do not live close enough to attend these schools. Thus, they must travel to and from school every day. Without the convenience of public transportation, many students find it difficult to attend these schools. Furthermore, these long commutes increase students’ expenses. Thus, students who live far away from schools in their home country often choose to study closer to home.
The fourth reason students choose to attend schools or universities in their home country is their family wishes that they study in their native country. Many students have family members who immigrated to the US or other countries. When these students attend schools abroad, they often feel homesick. Furthermore, the cultural norms in these countries differ significantly from that of their home countries. Some students feel uncomfortable attending parties and other social events that take place late at night or early in the morning. Students who cannot adapt to the cultural norms of foreign schools often choose to return home.
Students may study abroad for a variety of reasons. However, in most cases, students choose to attend schools or universities in their home country.
