Many students have to live with roommates while going to school or university. What are some of the important qualities of a good roommate?

Use specific reasons and examples to explain why these qualities are important.

I think there are many important qualities of a good roommate, but one of the most important is empathy. Finding a roommate who has empathy for the needs of others can greatly enhance the educational experience.

The first point I would like to address is the idea of ‘finding a roommate’. As has already been discussed, while it is true that many students live with roommates while attending school or university, doing so is not always ideal. The reasons for not living with roommates can vary, but more often than not, it is due to fundamental differences in personality or lifestyle. For this reason, I believe that one of the most important qualities of a good roommate is empathy. A roommate who is able to put others first, whether by going out of their way to help around the house, developing relationships with family members, or even sharing personal problems, can greatly improve the educational experience. One can only imagine how much easier it would be to face a stressful exam or late night paper writing session with a roommate who is truly there for one another. While a roommate’s willingness to offer assistance may seem like a small gesture, it can make all the difference in the world in easing the stress that a student would otherwise face. Empathy is one quality that many students could benefit from having in their roommate, and while it may not be possible, if it is part of someone’s character, then it should be encouraged to a certain extent.
