No field of study can advance significantly unless it incorporates knowledge and experience from outside that field.

The speaker states that no field of study can advance significantly unless it incorporates knowledge and experience from outside that field. The field of education is no exception to this maxim. With the increasing need for stringent standards, the educational process has become increasingly deemphasized, and teachers are pushed to teach specific content. The introduction of Common Core standards has caused teachers to become even more specialized. As a result, many teachers have taught the same curriculum for many years with little knowledge of the field, let alone experience in teaching it. This lack of experience creates a disconnect between teachers and the students to whom they are supposed to be teaching, and this lack of connection hinders the advancement of any field of study

The field of education is one that requires constant improvement. Students are constantly changing, and this necessitates classrooms that constantly evolve. In order to facilitate this evolution, teachers must constantly adapt their teaching methods. Teachers must choose the best material, the best activities, and the best assessments to ensure that each student is engaged during the lesson. Inexperienced teachers, however, may confuse content with instruction, and they may use their lesson plans as a template rather than as a foundation for instruction. Although the format of a lesson may vary slightly from teacher to teacher, the content remains the same. This lack of content knowledge may result in a poor lesson plan. Instead of allowing students to learn new material or practice skills, the teacher may engage in rote memorization or engage in a discussion of irrelevant topics. As a result, the students become bored and disengaged, and when they leave class, they may forget much of what they had learned. This lack of engagement discourages students from learning the material, and they may instead seek out easier or more interesting material. This lack of engagement also reinforces the misconception that teaching is boring, and students may avoid education altogether

Teachers need a certain amount of technical knowledge in order to effectively teach. While teachers may understand certain concepts related to their discipline, they may not understand how to teach these concepts. Many teachers are taught to memorize content and regurgitate it during the lesson, and they may be unable to adapt their lessons to the learning styles of their students. The inclusion of technology in the classroom is a specific example of this. While technology allows teachers to integrate technology into their lessons, it also teaches students how to effectively use the technology. Many teachers use clickers in their classrooms, but they may not know how to effectively use them. They may assume that their students know that pressing the button before answering a question will count as the correct response, and this may cause students to become frustrated or disengaged. This lack of understanding about technology may be due to a lack of experience or a lack of information about technology. Any teacher with experience using a computer in a workplace or with digital media has the necessary technical knowledge to teach a computer class. However, teachers who lack this technical knowledge must be willing to learn it in order to incorporate technology into their lessons

The lack of experience may also impede the advancement of a field by decreasing student interest in that field. Most students are only in school for a few years, and they may lose interest in certain subjects. As a result, they may not pursue the career related to that subject, and this may lead to a lack of practitioners in that field. Many teachers are faced with the dilemma of teaching subjects that students have no interest in, such as cursive writing, which is no longer taught in schools. Some teachers may teach cursive writing out of a sense of duty, but without students’ interest, this approach may be ineffective. When students do not see the need for cursive writing, they may ignore their teacher’s instructions and ignore their need for cursive. As a result, students may become disinterested in the subject, and they may not pursue careers related to cursive writing. The lack of interest may discourage teachers from teaching cursive, and this lack of teachers may result in a decline in the number of practitioners in this field

Although it is true that no field of study can advance significantly unless it incorporates knowledge and experience from outside that field, the statement is one-sided. It is possible that a lack of experience in a field may actually help that field advance. As a teacher, I know this to be true. Although my teaching degree did not include any teaching experience, I have taught two classes since becoming an educator. This experience has allowed me to improve my teaching skills, and this experience has helped me become a better teacher. I have also been able to apply the instructional techniques learned in college to my current teaching, and this has helped me incorporate technology into my lessons. While my lack of experience as a teacher may limit my career advancement, my lack of experience has instead helped me advance in my chosen field.
