Use specific reasons and examples to support your choice.
Music has been an important part of human culture for over 5,000 years. Throughout the history of humankind, music has been admired and esteemed for its emotional power, and its ability to affect mood, behavior, and spirituality. This type of music, known as ’emotional music,’ has been found to have therapeutic value. Music has also, throughout its history, been generally used for entertainment purposes. Although people enjoy listening to music for different reasons, their reasons for listening to the same piece of music may be quite different.
Music has the power to affect people in many ways. Music can be used to express emotion, and through our emotions we gain an understanding of the world around us. Some composers use music to express their emotions through their compositions. Beethoven, for example, composed many musical works in response to the death of his wife. Some of the most moving pieces of music are his ‘Waldstein’ piano sonatas, which include the Sonata Pathetique, which describes the grieving process in detail. Other composers, such as Wagner, have composed operas, which are stories built around music. These operas, such as Siegfried and Die Walküre, are complex pieces of music which express many emotions and are often difficult to understand. Music can also be used to express spirituality. Many composers, such as Bach, have created sacred music, which is meant to be played in church. This music, which is structured and ritualized, is meant to inspire awe and communion with God. Music can also be used for purely recreational purposes. Many people listen to music to relax, to forget about their problems and worries, or to help them fall asleep. Music can also help people exercise, since it can be used as a form of exercise. On a more positive note, music can bring people together. Concerts and music festivals offer people the opportunity to socialize, and classical music concerts are often attended by people who are there to listen to the music rather than to socialize.
Whether music is used to express emotion, spirituality, or for fun, it is an important part of human culture. Throughout the history of humankind, music has deeply affected people, and it continues to affect people today.
