Some famous athletes and entertainers earn millions of dollars every year. Do you think these people deserve such high salaries? Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion. The writer believes that some athletes and entertainers are overpaid. However, she fails to provide any evidence to support her claim. In fact, she offers only anecdotal evidence regarding two athletes and two entertainers. And while there may be good reasons for the exorbitant salaries paid by some athletes and entertainers, that is no excuse for the author to gloss over the real issues.

If there truly are athletes and entertainers who are overpaid, then, of course, they do deserve the salaries that they earn. However, it must be remembered that these athletes and entertainers are not paid salaries from public funds. They are paid from their own private funds, and so, by that token, do they deserve the wages they receive. While it is true that some athletes and entertainers earn millions of dollars from their performances, there are many for whom their popularity is direct proportional to the amount of money that they earn. For example, boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. earns millions of dollars every time he steps into the ring, yet he has only won one fight in his career. Thus, while Mayweather earns millions of dollars, many question if he is really worth the money. Similarly, actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who plays Hercules in the ‘Hercules’ franchise, was a wrestler, but he became immensely popular as a wrestler and actor. However, despite his enormous popularity, he has not been successful as a wrestler, having only won the WWE Championship once. Thus, while these athletes and entertainers make millions of dollars, this does not necessarily mean that they are worth this amount of money.

The writer also asserts that these athletes and entertainers are overpaid because they are famous. However, while she is correct that being famous is often a ticket to a high-paying profession, this does not automatically follow that fame equals worth. For example, rapper Kanye West, who is one of the most well-known entertainers in the world, is often the target of ridicule and derision for his outlandish statements and behavior. Yet, he earns millions of dollars a year from his concerts, sales of his music, and endorsements. Thus, while this rapper is famous, it would seem that his fame does not translate to higher earnings. Furthermore, many entertainers who are famous for being famous fail to earn millions of dollars. For example, musician Justin Bieber is one of the most famous teenagers in the world, but he has not managed to earn even a fraction of his earnings from his concerts and endorsements. Thus, while being famous may be a ticket to a high-paying job, this does not guarantee that he or she will earn a large salary.

Finally, there are millions of other athletes and entertainers who are just as talented and famous as the ones that the writer describes, yet they do not earn millions of dollars. Thus, there are undoubtedly fewer overpaid athletes and entertainers than the writer would have us believe.
