Some people think that governments should spend as much money as possible on developing or buying computer technology. Other people disagree and think that this money should be spent on more basic needs. Which one of these opinions do you agree with?
Use specific reasons and details to support your answer.
Actually, both opinions have some validity, but which do you consider to be the stronger one?’The government and its citizens disagree as to the role the government should play in developing computer technology. On one side, there are those who feel that the government should be as generous as possible in funding computer research, while on the other are those who feel that the government should instead spend as few dollars as possible on computer research, since computers are already widely available to most people. While I agree with the former sentiment, I also agree with the latter, though for different reasons.
First, I firmly believe that the government should be generous in funding computer research. After all, computers are spreading like wildfire across the planet, and it would make little sense for the government not to develop them further. After all, even the poorest of nations today have access to computers and the internet, so it certainly does not benefit them to have the government shut down such programs and not allow their citizens access to them. Rather, it would benefit them to have the government invest in further research and development of computer technology, so that they may be able to access even more advanced technology in the future. After all, no nation in the world has yet achieved computer parity with other countries, so it is clear that there is room for much improvement. Second, while it is true that computers are readily available to most people, it is important to realize that not everyone is well equipped to use computers. Many countries have yet to develop educational programs to teach their citizens basic computer skills, even though computers are useful in a wide variety of fields. Furthermore, many people in poorer countries do not have access to computers at all. Therefore, it is both wasteful and unfair for governments to withhold such technology from them and assume that they will learn to use computers on their own. It is far better for the government to spend more money on developing educational programs for computer use and allocating computers in poorer countries so that every citizen has an opportunity to use them.
While I believe that governments should spend as much money as possible on developing computer technology, I also believe that governments should spend as few dollars as possible on computer research. After all, there are already plenty of computers in use, and it is unlikely that governments can constantly increase the computing power of computers without running up huge costs. Furthermore, I believe that computers should remain accessible to the average citizen, not become available only to government officials. While the government may be able to afford to fund the development of new computer technology, it would be cruel to deny citizens access to computers altogether. Rather, the government should focus its efforts on developing better educational programs for computer use, so that its citizens may not only learn about computers, but may also use them to improve their lives.
