Some students like classes where teachers lecture (do all of the talking) in class. Other students prefer classes where the students do some of the talking. Which type of class do you prefer?

Give specific reasons and details to support your choice.

Some students like classes where teachers lecture (do all of the talking) in class. I believe that nearly all students in both North America and the United Kingdom prefer classes where the teacher does most of the talking in class. This preference has been shared by generations of students and continues to be true today. Students correctly recognize that the teacher’s job is to impart knowledge to them, and by talking most, the teacher accomplishes that task. Additionally, students recognize that the teacher’s knowledge is more valuable than their own. For these reasons, they listen intently to the teacher.

However, there may be students who would prefer to lecture, if given the opportunity. Most students have access to quality educational content at their fingertips, and they can easily access this information at will, including during class. Often, these students are bored with listening to lectures, and while they may listen passively at first, they may become restless and distracted and tune out the lecturer’s monotonous voice. On the other hand, students who prefer to lecture often are motivated by the fact that they feel that they possess expertise on the subject matter. Many students wish to present their ideas to their peers and demonstrate that their knowledge is superior. These students often are nervous during class, and they may overthink their presentations, causing them to stutter or lose their train of thought. Furthermore, students may be intimidated by other students’ intelligence, so they are reluctant to share their ideas in classes where most of the students speak. For these reasons, most students prefer classes where most of the talking is done by the teacher.
