The best way to understand the character of a society is to examine the character of the men and women that the society chooses as its heroes or its role models.

The sentiment that examining the character of the men and women that are held up as role models in a nation is the best way to understand a society’s values is not new. Indeed, Aristotle stated that ‘A nation’s soul is in its great men’, and men have been regarded, over the centuries, as the epitome of a nation’s worth
However, if we examine the concept of hero or role model in today’s context, it has come to mean something that goes far beyond being a figure of national stature or excellence. A hero or role model is now often believed to be someone with whom one identifies, something that he or she can aspire to, and someone who will lift one up or inspire him or her to follow his or her example. Thus, today, a character that stands as a magnificent example of selflessness or strength or courage is no longer a national icon, but a social media icon
As a social media icon, anyone can aspire to be like anyone. A character such as Iron Man, Captain America, or Batman is popular because fans identify with him, and they strive to be like him. They aspire to be strong, brave, and selfless, and this gives them a strength to face the challenges that come their way. They realize that if they believe they can become like their heroes, then they can overcome any obstacle
However, it takes more than just being like a hero to earn the title of ‘hero’, and it certainly takes more than possessing certain physical characteristics. Although a hero may be physically strong, he or she must also be mentally strong. A hero must have the mental fortitude to persevere in the face of adversity and to remain steadfast in the belief that he or she will overcome all obstacles. A hero must also be intelligent. The hero’s intellect must be sharp enough to solve the problems that confront him or her. He must also have a strong sense of loyalty and empathy, so that all the people he or she encounters—even those, such as villains, who appear to be his enemies—are treated humanely and with respect. Once again, this makes him stronger and gives him the will to go on. This is because if he had no empathy or loyalty, he would give up easily. Furthermore, a hero must possess great knowledge of his or her mission and a strong sense of justice. He must be willing to fight for what is right, even if it means that he must face great danger
Finally, a hero must have integrity. He must be honest, and he must have the courage to stand up to those, such as politicians, who lie or cheat or steal. Even the most admirable heroes are human, and they make mistakes. However, instead of admitting their wrongdoing, they strive to correct the errors, and this makes them even more admirable. Thus, the hero has become more than a national icon; he has evolved into a social media icon
The need for role models is great. In today’s world, it is almost impossible for a person to accomplish anything of significance without the support of others. Thus, an individual must seek the support and guidance of those who he or she considers to be heroes and role models. If an individual discovers a hero, he or she will try to emulate the character’s behavior. In doing so, the individual will strive to achieve a level of success that would be impossible without the support of his or her heroes. Furthermore, the hero can serve as a role model for society. If a hero, such as Mahatma Gandhi, stands up for what is right, then more and more people will follow his example. He can become a symbol of courage, and he can inspire others to act in concert to achieve a common purpose. However, if a hero, such as Osama Bin Laden, is revered as a national hero or role model, then there will always be a danger that his actions will be emulated by others, resulting in even more chaos and violence
In conclusion, it can be argued that while examining the character of a nation’s heroes or role models is the best way of understanding a society’s values, it is not the only method available. Perhaps the society in question should examine its heroes and role models. Perhaps it should also consider examining its own heroes and role models. After all, society is comprised of individuals, and society’s heroes and role models should provide examples of what individuals can do.
