True success can be measured primarily in terms of the goals one sets for oneself.

The statement claims that true success can be measured primarily in terms of the goals one sets for oneself. I strongly disagree with this statement. Although goals are important, they are not the sole measure of how successful an individual is. During these times in which greater numbers of people are eschewing traditional career paths in order to seek their own path in life, I believe goals are still an important part of success. Goals give these individuals a sense of purpose, and offer incentive to work hard to reach them

In order to pursue a goal, one must understand what the goal is. Unfortunately, many individuals who pursue goals in life do not understand their goals well enough. They set out to accomplish something, but fail to consider all of the factors that could derail their intended journey: distractions, financial limitations, interpersonal issues, and other obstacles. Without a comprehensive plan for reaching their goal, these individuals may find themselves struggling. Further, without goals, these individuals may be unable to achieve some success. Without a goal to strive toward, a person may simply drift through life, unable to decide upon meaningful goals or courses of action. The individual may accomplish little, or even nothing, because he or she does not know where or what to aim for. Goals are essential to keep people motivated and on track

The statement also claims that goals give one a sense of ‘purpose.’ This is correct in the sense that goals can give one a sense of direction. But goals alone cannot give an individual a purpose. Many people, for instance, set out to accomplish particular tasks, like writing a book or building a business or career. Without a larger purpose, the individual may simply feel that he has accomplished something, but may have achieved nothing. If a person does not find meaning in what he does, he will soon begin to feel purposeless and will find himself drifting. At some point, he will realize that he has a responsibility toward others, or toward some higher goal, and he will have a purpose. In short, goals give one a direction, but not a purpose

This statement also assumes that people can only be truly successful if they set goals for themselves. This may be true for some people, but that is not the case for everyone. A goal-oriented person may find that the process itself helps him achieve his goals. Setting goals gives a person an idea about what course of action to pursue. However, for many people, the process of setting goals itself can be arduous. They must weigh the pros and cons of different courses of action. They must consider their strengths and weaknesses, as well as the environmental factors that may affect their chances for success. In some cases, the goals themselves may be unrealistic. Some people may have the mistaken idea that in order to succeed in life, they must achieve something spectacular, like becoming an astronaut or finding a cure for cancer. However, it is virtually impossible to achieve these goals. If an individual focuses his energy on these goals, he will fail to achieve them, even if they are attainable. He may have his life filled with disappointment and failure, which ultimately will make him feel unsuccessful

When individuals undergo the process of setting goals, they may discover that they have more important goals than they had originally thought. They may realize that their goals were based solely on selfish desires, such as getting rich or achieving fame. They may discover that their goals were unrealistic, and that attaining them would not be worth all of the time and effort. Regardless of the situation, setting goals can be a useful, enlightening process. The goals that an individual sets for himself may not lead to true success, but the process of setting goals can lead to a better understanding of one’s true self.
