The following article provides a comparison between these two options:
When people move to another country, many decide to follow the customs of the new country. I argue that this choice is usually the best choice, while those who continue to follow their own customs usually end up regretting their decision.
However, there are exceptions to almost every rule, and in the case of moving to a new country, I argue that adhering to old customs is a better choice than following new ones. Some customs are simply more attractive than new ones, and following these customs will attract more people who might otherwise have avoided it.
Many countries, such as Thailand, offer a wide variety of tourist attractions. These attractions, which range from natural landmarks to historical landmarks to manmade attractions, bring in millions of tourists every year. Tourists want to visit these places because of their beauty, perhaps because they have lived through the experience of visiting one of the destinations, or maybe because these places have been featured in a movie, book, or other media, making them famous. However, tourists also enjoy the local culture and cuisine, and moving to another country may force them to reject their native cuisine in favor of the new country’s cuisine. In addition, some people simply enjoy old customs, such as going to church on Sunday, having dinner with their families, or celebrating certain holidays. These customs may not be considered cultural by some people, but they may follow those customs out of habit or because they feel they contribute to their happiness. Moreover, those customs that are difficult to maintain in the new country, such as celebrating holidays, may take longer to adopt in the new country. Therefore, while some people may flock to other countries to experience new customs, others may continue to follow their native customs, making their choice between the two options rather subjective. Another major factor that complicates the choice is whether a person is moving to a new country for work, in which case he or she may decide to preserve certain customs. For example, American tourists who visit European countries, such as Germany or France, may find themselves eating mostly German or French food, even though these countries have a wide variety of cuisines that tourists could choose from. This makes the decision to continue to follow their native customs or to adopt new customs difficult, because some people may feel guilty for abandoning their own culture.
Personally, I favor people following their old customs when moving to a new country. When I moved to the United States from another country, I had a hard time adapting to American customs, but I managed to overcome those difficulties and have even come to enjoy them. For example, I enjoy going to movies, but I found that many American movies are too long and feature a lot of dull dialogue. I also discovered that American food is not my favorite, so I found myself eating a lot of Indian food. However, in the end, I realized that I could have avoided those difficulties if I would simply have followed my old customs. For example, I could have decided to follow my own religion, rather than changing religions and converting. Furthermore, I could have stayed in touch with my relatives back at home, rather than making new friends. Traveling to another country can be an exciting experience, but it is important to take a critical look at the new country’s customs, and one should avoid making any drastic changes when moving to a new country.
