Why do you think some people are attracted to dangerous sports or other dangerous activities?
Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
Many people prefer to play dangerous sports or to engage in dangerous activities, instead of staying away from the risk. Why is that?
People are attracted to dangerous sports and other dangerous activities because they challenge them, test their courage, and give them a sense of achievement. They do not mind the risks and are willing to put their lives on the line. However, this obsession of putting your life at risk can have negative repercussions on your health, as the risk of injury is high. This often deters people who would otherwise avoid dangerous activities from pursuing them.
Despite the many advantages that people enjoy from participating in dangerous sports or activities, the risks can ultimately outweigh the reward. If you participate in a dangerous sport, you are putting your life at great risk. There are innumerable examples of people dying while performing these hobbies, such as in climbing or skydiving. Even a seemingly safe activity such as surfing, which many people enjoy, can result in a serious injury if you fall from a great height. Typically, these activities require great skill, and without the proper training or experience, you can certainly fall.
Once you have injured yourself, it may take a long time to heal and recover. In extreme cases, injuries can be life-threatening. For example, a snowboarder who loses control while airborne can hit a tree or rock at great speed. The force of the impact can break bones, or, in extreme cases, cause the person to cut off an artery or vein. It is not unusual for a severe injury in an extreme sport to require surgery. Furthermore, due to the physical exertion involved in extreme sports, the recovery time is much longer. The recovery time is even longer if you must return to your regular job after your recovery, which can be dangerous in itself. Therefore, the risks and recovery time associated with dangerous sports are so great that many people are deterred from participating and, as a result, the activity does not grow in popularity.
The reason that many people are attracted to dangerous sports or activities is that they are exciting. People who participate in these activities are not interested in being safe. They enjoy facing great challenges and overcoming them. However, the excitement from dangerous sports is short-lived. The thrill of doing something risky does not last, and the thrill of victory fades quickly. The excitement of these hobbies is short-term and people often become bored. As people get older, they are less willing to risk their lives to complete these hobbies. It is difficult to find excitement in a dangerous activity when the risks outweigh the benefits.
A dangerous activity is attractive because it challenges a person and promotes self-confidence. When you participate in a dangerous sport, you often face great challenges that can test your inner strength. The thrill of overcoming these challenges gives you a sense of accomplishment. However, once the danger has passed, the sense of accomplishment does not last. When you become bored with these activities, the excitement quickly fades. Eventually, the thrill is gone, and you begin to feel bored and restless. At that point, many people lose interest in participating in dangerous sports or activities.
The reason some people participate in dangerous sports or activities is because they want to be ‘one of the guys’ or ‘one of the gals. When most people try a new sport, they join a group of people who have the same interests. They participate in group activities, such as meeting up before or after work, eating together, or going out to dinner. When these activities are dangerous, such as rock climbing or skydiving, the group becomes even more close-knit. It can be difficult to break away from a group whose members participate in dangerous activities. People who participate in these activities tend to be very social, and they enjoy being around others who share their interests. When you are part of a group, you are more motivated to participate in those activities. However, the danger can quickly turn people off, and many people lose interest in the group.
Incidentally, people who participate in dangerous sports or activities tend to have a distorted sense of reality. They overestimate their abilities and underestimate the risks of the activities. For example, a biker may believe that he can ride his bike through traffic without getting hit, or a pilot may believe that he can fly the plane safely. These inaccurate beliefs contribute to dangerous behavior. People get into car accidents or planes that crash because they overestimate their abilities. These accidents cause serious injuries and sometimes death.
The reasons people participate in dangerous sports or activities are not valid. The risks outweigh the benefits, and therefore, people who participate in these activities are putting their lives at risk. Although some people enjoy the thrill of danger, most people want to eliminate risk from their lives. They feel safer when they participate in activities that are relatively safe and do not involve any risk.
